Title Tags- Don’t Waste Space

Thursday, July 2, 2009

I always cringe when I come across a website that says Page 1, or something similar, in the title tag. Optimizing the title tag is an important part of search engine optimization so leaving Page 1 or Your Website Here in that space means someone is really not being careful.

Likewise, putting your business name as the title of all the pages isn’t helpful. If you have an article on your site about How to Upgrade Your Laptop, that is what the title should be, not Joe’s Laptop Supply.

Many companies make this mistake because they think it helps with branding. But when it comes down to it, title tags aren’t for branding, they are for search engine optimization.

Furthermore, using a title that says Joe’s Laptop Supply | How to Upgrade Your Laptop isn’t correct either. The keywords should always be first so that the page is optimized for those particular terms. This helps with the ranking.

By the way, when it comes to putting keywords in the title tag, be sure not to overdo it.
